“We’ve been America’s Dinner Table for nearly 70 years and April 12 is a great day for the Shoney’s brand. We are excited to celebrate our triumphant return to Acworth,” said Mr. David Davoudpour, CEO and Chairman of Shoney’s. “You’ll find all of the Shoney’s favorites and some exciting new things that are paving the way for Shoney’s bright future. The best of Shoney’s past and present are all right here in Acworth.”

Scott and his wife Christa Rechsteiner have been wanting to open a Shoney’s for years so when the opportunity arose to rebuild an existing one in the community where they live, they jumped on it. The Rechsteiners are very active in the local community with Christa volunteering for the PTA and Scott coaching 6th grade football. In September of 2015, Steiner drove the bulldozer that helped demolish an older Shoney’s in order to accommodate a brand new Shoney’s and a fresh start for the brand in Acworth.

“The reception from the local community for our new Shoney’s has truly been amazing,” said Mrs. Rechsteiner.  “This community really needed a family-friendly restaurant and we feel truly blessed to open a Shoney’s where we live and our kids go to school. Shoney’s is such a wonderful brand with a rich history and we are excited to be a part of the brand’s growth and future.”

Steiner’s rich wrestling history and memorabilia will be on display in the restaurant’s private dining area. Mr. Davoudpour will also be there and plans to be serving guests FREE Hot Fudge Cake, which has been a guest favorite since 1947.

New-look Shoney’s eyes major expansion http://www.shoneys.com/new-look-shoneys-eyes-major-expansion/ http://www.shoneys.com/new-look-shoneys-eyes-major-expansion/#comments Thu, 24 Mar 2016 18:47:17 +0000 http://www.shoneys.com/?p=5690 Shoney’s CEO David Davoudpour is poised to launch a sweeping expansion effort following a significant overhaul of the dining chain he bought nine years ago.

The Nashville-based company is turning its focus to franchising with the long-term goal of opening hundreds of new locations following a years-long effort to revamp its menu and aesthetic.

“There is no reason for us to forget about iconic American brands, whether it be in the car industry, transportation or hospitality. We are determined to make sure the Shoney’s brand stays in front of every American,” Davoudpour said.

A longtime Atlanta restaurateur, Davoudpour in late 2006 acquired the Nashville chain that was founded 69 years ago and narrowly avoided bankruptcy in 2001. In its heyday, Shoney’s had close to 1,300 locations. The company has about 150 restaurants today.

Davoudpour froze franchising efforts to first overhaul Shoney’s menu and then introduced a new look for its restaurants.

“You have to be able to, in many ways, reward a franchisee with a product you believe in 100 percent. The frozen burger was not a product I believed in,” Davoudpour said.

The goal of the changes is to keep core customers happy while bringing in new ones, particularly millennials who may not be as familiar with the brand.

In a similar move, Cracker Barrel, another locally based dining chain, is targeting new clientele with the launch of fast-casual biscuit house Holler & Dash.

Under new executive chef Eric Cleveland, Shoney’s moved away from frozen foods, opting instead for fresh ingredients offered at a value, Davoudpour said. Newer menu additions include grilled whitefish, chicken Florentine, a chicken club sandwich, beef sliders and chicken wings. Updated menus rolled out at the restaurants on March 1.

The restaurant still serves its tried-and-true favorites, such as the Shoney’s burger — which is now made fresh with 100 percent ground beef — and the salad bar and hot food bar.

Shoney’s also announced this week that it is jumping on the cage-free egg bandwagon with plans to source 100 percent of the 50 million eggs it uses each year from hens that aren’t confined to cages by 2025.

“Naturally, we’re looking for the best quality food that is healthy for our consumer base. Kids coming to our restaurant, we want to make sure they eat fresh lettuce. We want to make sure we give them…fresh cracked eggs,” Davoudpour said.

Davoudpour places Shoney’s in between family dining chains such as Golden Corral and Cracker Barrel and full-service restaurants with bars such as Ruby Tuesday.

Part of the Shoney’s revamp includes adding full bars or wine and beer in certain markets. On tap in the Nashville area, the company-owned Shoney’s at 546 Donelson Pike is slated for a remodel that will add liquor to the menu.

Davoudpour said the company is looking for a new Shoney’s location in the Madison area after the restaurant at 720 Gallatin Pike, the first Shoney’s in the state, closed for a remodel in August but then lost its lease and never reopened.

He said all Shoney’s locations will be remodeled, but it’s an effort that will take about 10 years to complete. All new restaurants will feature the new look. Each restaurant is designed unique to its particular market, Davoudpour said.

“What works in Nashville may not work in Kalamazoo, Mich., may not work in Acworth, Ga.,” Davoudpour said.

Expansion of the brand is reliant on franchisees, Davoudpour said. He hired a new director of franchise sales to spearhead that effort.

As for where growth opportunities exist for Shoney’s, Davoudpour said there are no limitations.

“We would love to be everywhere,” he said.

All-American, Iconic Brand to Make Cage-Free Transition at All Shoney’s by 2025 http://www.shoneys.com/all-american-iconic-brand-to-make-cage-free-transition-at-all-shoneys-by-2025/ http://www.shoneys.com/all-american-iconic-brand-to-make-cage-free-transition-at-all-shoneys-by-2025/#comments Thu, 24 Mar 2016 15:16:05 +0000 http://www.shoneys.com/?p=5684 Shoney’s, America’s Dinner Table since 1947, today announced its commitment to serve 100 percent cage-free eggs in all of its restaurants by 2025. The announcement makes the All-American restaurant brand one of the first within the family casual dining segment to commit to only cage-free eggs.

Shoney’s will work with its suppliers to back the brand’s dedication to the humane treatment of animals and expects a smooth implementation of this directive over the next few years.

Shoney's Makes Commitment to Serve Only Cage-Free Eggs

“We have begun the process of working closely with our suppliers to determine the best sourcing for our eggs and want to be advocates of and partners with the evolution of our supply sourcing chain,” said David Davoudpour, Shoney’s Chairman and CEO. “We feel this is the right move for our iconic brand and is part of our overarching commitment to providing our guests with fresh quality food at a great value, in the right way. We are proud to be a leader in this cage-free initiative.”

Eggs are a brand staple for Shoney’s, which has served all-day breakfast for nearly 70 years. In addition to being featured on Shoney’s Legendary Breakfast Buffet®, available cooked-to-order from the menu, eggs are the featured item in Shoney’s All-Star Breakfast, which includes two freshly cracked eggs over easy with two slices of Shoney’s signature crispy bacon, savory breakfast potatoes and a freshly prepared buttermilk biscuit, all for $4.99. Shoney’s serves over 50 million eggs per year to its valued guests.

“This is about a movement, not a trend,” continued Davoudpour, who acquired Shoney’s in 2007. Since then, he has been on a driven and spirited mission to revive and reinvigorate Shoney’s family-friendly, southern style restaurants, which was one of the premier family dining concepts in the United States. “Eggs have been a part of our great history and will be a part of this brand’s bright future.”

A Southern institution, where teenagers used to circle their cars as a place to been seen on Friday and Saturday nights, is getting a new look.

Shoney’s will revamp its menus and remodel its restaurants as part of a revitalization effort spearheaded by new Chairman and CEO David Davoudpour. Davoudpour bought the company in 2007 and immediately halted franchising efforts, Director of Franchise Sales Terri Harof said.

“He stopped franchising because he wanted to fix the brand before he franchised it,” she said.

Shoney’s had only 282 restaurants nationwide when Davoudpour bought the company. During its peak years in the late 1990s, the chain had over 1,300 locations. Harof said Davoudpour systematically improved integral parts of the brand, such as the menu, buffet bar and general layout.

“He started from the bottom and worked his way up,” she said.

The changes to the Shoney’s brand focus on store appearances and the menu.

“The brand achieved its place as an American icon with fresh quality food at a great value and we cannot wait to show it off to a new generation,” Davoudpour said in a press release.

Shoney’s will add chicken wings, chicken club sandwiches, chicken florentine, and grilled white fish to its menu, and remove turkey burgers and chicken salad sandwiches.

Harof said the changes fit naturally into the Shoney’s brand.

“Really our theme is American food with southern hospitality. That’s who we’ve always been,” she said.

Some of the changes come from customer requests, Harof said.

“Eric Cleveland, our executive chef, keeps his pulse on trends, and we also listen to our customers. If they’re on Facebook saying, ‘I miss this’ or ‘Why don’t you have that,’ we’re listening,” she said.

Harof said the restaurant will also focus on providing healthier options.

“It’s not freezer to fryer, it’s fresh, great food,” she said.

The property where Shoney’s Columbia restaurant is located was sold in 2014 for $1 million to Steve Bostleman, who owns several other properties on Carmack Boulevard. Bostleman said he had no comment on his plans for the property.

Harof said the change in ownership will not affect Shoney’s.

“There’s been no discussion. We’ve been there and we plan on staying there,” she said.

The Columbia location will be updated in the future.

“The ultimate goal is for all restaurants to be remodeled,” Harof said. “Not all will be updated right away and it depends on demographics. We’ll be going store by store.”

Plans for the redesign include a full bar and flat screen TVs.

“The plan is to bring a whole new look to Shoney’s. The colors are vibrant and it’s modern,” Harof said. “Our customers love the new look, and we love the new look.

It is available all day, every day and has been for decades. Yet another amazing proposition value from brand.

Metro Nashville students map their own path to a career

Last November, more than 7,000 Metro Public School freshmen converged on the Music City Center to take part in the My Future, My Way Career Exploration Fair.

2015 was the seventh year for the fair, which gives young people a chance to visit dozens of displays staffed by Middle Tennessee employers and talk one-on-one with a teacher, a firefighter, a police officer, an IT technician or health care worker about what it takes to get a job in their industry.

The students can ask questions and are encouraged to take notes, but most of all, the career fair gives young people a sense of the type of education necessary to develop a career in a field that interests them.

The Feb. 23 school board meeting celebrated student achievements. Front row, L-R: David Davoudpour, Torri Johnson, Beverley Flatt, Rita McDonald, Lindsey Dao. Back row, L-R: Chris Henson, Sharon Gentry, Tyese Hunter, Jill Pittman, JoAnn Brannon, Adrienne Koger. Image via Nashville Area Chamber

After the fair, the students go back to their respective schools, discuss their experiences with prospective employers and write a short essay on what may have intrigued them about a profession or what they may have learned. A few weeks ago, two winning essays were selected, and the students who wrote them are being recognized by the Metro School Board on Tuesday.

John Overton High School student Lindsey Dao had a sense that she wanted to work in the health care field, but the career fair gave her the opportunity to explore a range of choices within health care.

Lindsey spent time talking to nurses and doctors from local hospitals and came away feeling that a career in pediatrics is her calling. The advice she received from a pediatrician from the Vanderbilt Pediatric Residency Program stuck with Lindsey: “Focus on school, focus on science.” She admitted she now sees a pathway from her classes in high school to a career she would love.

Nolan Carrasquillo, a freshman at Antioch High School, called the career exploration fair “amazing” and thanked the employers who explained in detail the qualifications someone would need to work in their field. He was a little surprised to see a band of talented musicians staffing one booth and talking to students about careers in the music industry between performances.

Nolan wrote that he came away from the experience with the sense that if he could find a profession he loved, hard work and persistence would pay off in the end.

Both students admitted there were employers who talked about professions that were interesting, but not the best fit for them. Lindsey acknowledged that the prospects for finding a career in IT would probably be pretty good if she went on to study that field after high school, but it probably isn’t for her. That’s okay. The career fair is as much about exploring possibilities and narrowing your choices as it is about finding your passion.

Like the members of the Metro Nashville School Board and the teachers and administrators at Overton and Antioch, I’ll be immensely proud of Lindsey and Nolan when they share their essays with the board.

They’re like the thousands of other Metro students I met at the career fair: bright, curious and ready with lots of good questions. I’m convinced that some day in the not-too-distant future, a company or organization is going to be pleased it hired young people like Lindsey and Nolan to help them succeed. Their future is bright, and I’m glad the career exploration fair played a part.

David Davoudpour is chairman and CEO of Shoney’s, Inc, a partner with the Metro Nashville Public Schools in sponsoring the My Future, My Way Career Exploration Fair.

Shoney's Set to Return to 'Glory Days' With Franchising Focus Following Extensive Revitalization Effort

Since acquiring the great American eatery in 2007, Davoudpour has been on a driven and spirited mission to reinvigorate and revitalize Shoney’s, a family-friendly, southern-style restaurant brand. Shoney’s was one of the first family casual dining concepts in the United States.

“When I bought the brand, I declared that we would bring Shoney’s back to the forefront by proudly serving delicious, fresh-never frozen food that is highly craveable. In addition, we rely on our company’s three pillars: innovation, simplicity and giving back to our local communities,” said Davoudpour. “Shoney’s is now ready to grow the brand by teaming up with franchise partners who share our commitment to this great brand.”

The most recent franchisee to come on board is the world famous wrestler and former WCW Heavyweight Champion “Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner (Scott Rechsteiner) with his wife Christa, who are building a brand new Shoney’s in Acworth, Georgia, which is scheduled to open in early March.

“The changes Shoney’s has made to the food using fresh ingredients and offering innovative menu items as well as the beautifully redesigned restaurants with modern furnishing is truly amazing,” said Christa Rechsteiner. “Shoney’s is such a wonderful brand with a rich history that is just getting better. We feel truly blessed to open a Shoney’s where we live and our kids go to school.”

The 6,000 square foot Shoney’s will feature some of new brand standards including a full service granite bar with stacked stone, a private dining area for larger parties, large TV’s, fresh squeezed OJ, salad and hot food buffet and a variety of freshly prepared options from the menu.  The private dining area will include an array of wrestling memorabilia.

According to Harof, Shoney’s has been a household name for decades to many people and the brand is excited to reach new guests in new neighborhoods. “Now, we’re introducing Shoney’s to a new generation in new markets throughout the world by expanding via franchising with redesigned restaurants and a renewed dedication to fresh quality food, friendly service at a great value.” said Harof.

Shoney’s is offering franchising opportunities to qualified single and multi-unit candidates. For more information, visit http://www.shoneys.com/franchise/.

Enjoy Freshly Caught & Prepared Seafood, and Special Friday Night Buffet – While They’re Still Here!

Nashville, TN. It’s that time of year when fresh seafood is at the top of everyone’s wish list – and Shoney’s has netted three great new items for its line-up, as well a kicked-up Friday Night Seafood Buffet.

Shoney’s Coastal Catch features the best seafood found in its coast-to-coast search, prepared with All-American iconic restaurant’s signature, scratch-made quality. This year’s catch features:

  • Grilled Shrimp Skewer: Garlic grilled shrimp served with rice pilaf and choice of side
  • Po’ Boy Sandwich: Crispy, zesty shrimp with fresh lettuce and tomato on a toasted hoagie with Cajun sauce, served with French fries and coleslaw
  • Wild-Caught Pacific Salmon with Sweet Heat Glaze: Grilled salmon filet topped with a sweet heat glaze, served with rice pilaf and choice of side.

Not only will these specials be on the menu from Feb. 10-March 24, on Fridays during the same period guests can enjoy Shoney’s Friday Night Seafood Buffet. The enhanced buffet offers even more of the sea’s bounty, with items including Cajun Steamed Crawfish, Low-Country Seafood Rice, Parmesan-Crusted White Fish, Garlic Steamed Mussels, and Creamy Seafood Bake.

“It’s the season for seafood, and we’re offering the finest and freshest the ocean has to offer,” said David Davoudpour, Shoney’s Chairman and CEO. “With our signature fresh and home-style preparation, friendly service, and value, our Coastal Catch will satisfy our guests on every level.”

Shoney’s is also offering a perfectly refreshing pair to complement its Coastal Catch specials: Peach Tea – Shoney’s house-brewed iced tea infused with peach flavor, and to finish the meal off, Peach Cobbler – golden, sweet peaches baked in a flaky crust and topped with vanilla bean ice cream.

Since acquiring the great American eatery in 2007, Davoudpour has been on a driven and spirited mission to revitalize and reinvigorate Shoney’s, a family-friendly, southern-style restaurant brand. Shoney’s was one of the first family casual dining concepts in the United States. Shoney’s is now offering franchising opportunities to qualified single and multi-unit candidates.
