After working his way to the top, Ashford now is the proud owner of three Shoney’s in Greenville, Dothan and soon to be in Evergreen.

When Eric Ashford was growing up in Pickens County, there were just two real choices in life for a young man like him. “You either worked in pulpwood or you went into the military, that was basically it,” Ashford, owner of the Greenville Shoney’s, explained.

Known more for cutting up in class than applying himself to his studies, the idea of higher education and training for a profession “wasn’t even something that entered my mind.”

“I wasn’t a bad kid. My grandparents who raised me did teach me integrity and respect–and good southern cooking. But back then, yes, I was pretty much the one in school least likely to succeed,” Ashford said.

An encounter at a restaurant while visiting relatives in Tallahassee, Fla., became a life-changer.

“I don’t think I’d ever been inside a ‘real’ restaurant, just the small town places back in Carollton. This man came up to me and asked me if I want a job—and that’s how it began. After hauling pulpwood, working in a restaurant seemed pretty easy,” Ashford explained.

At age 18, he started off washing dishes at the Florida restaurant and over time, worked his way up through the ranks. Ashford set himself the goal of being the best at whatever tasks were assigned to him along the way.

“I was going to be the best dishwasher, the best floor sweeper, the best bus boy, the best food bar manager—there was something inside me that made me want to make things better for my family and in the world.”

Today Ashford is the owner of three Shoney’s, including the Greenville and Dothan locations since 2005, along with an Evergreen location built from the ground up and opened in March 2016. He notes with a quiet pride he is the first African-American owner to build a brand-new Shoney’s.

“Building the Evergreen restaurant was a big challenge and a learning experience. There were good days and bad days. I just held on to my faith in God and that kept me strong,” Ashford recalled.

“Honestly, in the beginning I never thought I would make it this far. But with hard work, respect for everyone and integrity, I’ve come to this place in life.”

Just as someone once took a chance on him, Ashford, too, wants to give young people an opportunity to work and to succeed in their lives.

“I take an interest in the employees and I try to encourage them to do their best at their jobs and in the classroom. I talk with them about grades and even see their report cards,” Ashford explained. “I never had the grades to get into college, but I want my employees and my children to know they have these opportunities if they have determination and work for them.”

Ashford and his wife Patrice take great pride in the accomplishments of their three daughters, Ericka, Elisha and Ashley, with two having already earned their bachelor’s degrees and the third slated to graduate in two years.

“I think it’s my biggest accomplishment, being able to give our girls the education I didn’t have the chance to get,” Ashford said. Ashford has a particular affection for his Camellia City restaurant, calling it “my baby.”

“I love Greenville. This community here has been so welcoming and supportive from the beginning. And we like being involved with the city in various ways,” he said.

Ashford, who often speaks to youth groups and civic clubs, has a message for young people.

“I always ask them, ‘What drives you?’ and ‘What are you working for?’ If you love what you do, if you have a passion for it—that will lead you to your destiny.”

Excuses, Ashford says, have to be kicked to the curb.

“I could have made a lot of excuses. My dad died when I was seven, I was raised by my grandparents, life didn’t give me many opportunities,” he says.

“But I pushed all that out of the way and went on. If everything hadn’t worked out, at least I could say I tried. And if everything was lost tomorrow, I could say I did get this far. You’ve always got to look on the positive side and keep aiming high.”

America’s Dinner Table for Nearly 70 Years, Shoney’s Wants to Say Thank You to America’s Law Enforcement Community

In an unprecedented move by a category leader in the restaurant industry, Shoney’s, the iconic, All-American restaurant brand that has served as America’s Dinner Table for nearly 70 years, will serve those who protect and serve America’s communities every day with open arms and a free meal – breakfast, lunch or dinner – for members of America’s law enforcement community during all hours of operation on Wednesday, July 27.

The gesture, conceived by Shoney’s CEO and Chairman Mr. David Davoudpour, who has a rich track record of supporting law enforcement, was quickly and unanimously approved system-wide by Shoney’s franchise partners and will happen in less than a week.

Shoney's to Honor America's Men and Women in Blue with a Free Meal on Wednesday, July 27

“America’s men and women in blue need to hear ‘Thank You’ in a tangible and heartfelt way,” said Mr. Davoudpour. “Shoney’s opens its doors every day so that families can enjoy fresh quality food, friendly service for an incredible value but it is never lost on us that none of that happens without our men and women of law enforcement across this great country of ours who make our communities safe. We want to thank them and we salute them with a free meal on the house. If you’re a police officer in your hometown or are traveling to a place where Shoney’s does business, please know you are welcome here. I say ‘Let’s Eat’ – for free.”

Mr. Davoudpour, who has been on a driven and spirited mission to reinvigorate and revitalize Shoney’s, a family-friendly, southern-style restaurant brand, said that members of law enforcement are welcome at Shoney’s every day but has pledged to cover the meals of America’s men in women in blue on the 27th, no purchase required.

“Breakfast, lunch or dinner, it doesn’t matter, we just want to serve them our great food to show them we care and that we are grateful for them,” continued Mr. Davoudpour. One of the pillars of the Shoney’s brand is community involvement, evidenced in particular by Mr. Davoudpour’s support of law enforcement.

Shoney's to Honor America's Men and Women in Blue with a Free Meal on Wednesday, July 27In Shoney’s headquarters city of Nashville, Davoudpour created the annual Shoney’s 5k Family Fun Runeight years ago. One hundred percent of the event’s proceeds, which Davoudpour has matched personally every year, benefit the Nashville Police Fund. The fund provides tuition assistance to police officers seeking college degrees and supports other educational pursuits. Nearly $180,000 has been raised by Shoney’s and Davoudpour, who supports law enforcement programs in other communities where Shoney’s does business.

Shoney’s offer of a free meal to police officers and all members of law enforcement is available during all hours of operations on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at all Shoney’s restaurants. There is a limit of one free meal per member of the law enforcement community. Members of the law enforcement community will need to be in uniform or show proper identification. Offer is valid for dine-in only.

Brand Resurgence Continues as America’s Dinner Table Voted One of the Best Eight Family Dining Restaurants; Shoney’s Selected 6th Overall, Scores Well for Service, Menu Variety and Diners Being Likely to Recommend It

Nashville, TN – Consumers have spoken and they like Shoney’s, a lot, especially when it comes to value.

Shoney’s, America’s Dinner Table for nearly 70 years, was voted one of the best 8 family dining restaurants in the United States in the 2016 Consumer Picks Survey via Nation’s Restaurant News, placing #6 overall. In the survey, Shoney’s was recognized for having the best rating for value among all family dining chains and also scored well for its service, menu variety and diners being likely to recommend it. The distinction has been the vision of Shoney’s Chairman and CEO Mr. David Davoudpour.

“For nearly 70 years, Shoney’s has been dedicated to serving fresh quality food at a great value with friendly service. To be voted as among the best family dining brands tells us we are giving our guests what they want,” said Mr. Davoudpour. “And to be recognized as the best value of them all is, like we say in the industry, icing on the cake.”

Mr. Davoudpour has been on a driven and spirited mission to reinvigorate and revitalize Shoney’s, a family-friendly, southern-style restaurant brand. Shoney’s is one of the first and has always been one of the most popular family casual dining concepts in the United States.

“I’d call it a comeback, but Shoney’s has always been an iconic brand,” continued Mr. Davoudpour. “Let’s just say we’re better than ever and continuing to improve. We’re honored by the recognition but we won’t be satisfied until we are the best of the best in every category.”

In order to get back to what Mr. Davoudpour confidently calls Shoney’s “Glory Days,” the brand is now growing through franchising following an extensive revitalization effort. Shoney’s is offering franchising opportunities to qualified single and multi-unit candidates.

Hundreds of participants – a record number – gathered on the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge to compete in the scenic 5K while hundreds more came to LP Field to celebrate Nashville’s men and women in blue at the annual Fun Run & Festival, which featured a complimentary Shoney’s Legendary Breakfast Buffet® and incredible live entertainment by Soul Confidant, the winner of Shoney’s inaugural Band Selection contest.

Shoney's 5K Family Fun Run Raises $17,000 for the Nashville Police Support Fund

Shoney’s Chairman and CEO Mr. David Davoudpour, who runs each year, graciously sponsored the event and as he has done in the past, personally matched all money raised through race registrations dollar for dollar. Several beneficiaries of previous Shoney’s 5K Fun Runs were on hand and personally sought out Davoudpour to thank him.

“Nashville is a premier international and cosmopolitan city and under the leadership of Chief Anderson, Metropolitan Nashville Police Department has worked hard to make Nashville the safest city in America, a great place to live, to do business and to raise a family,” said Mr. Davoudpour.

Nashville Police Chief Steve Anderson and a host of the MNPD’s officers were on hand to oversee the event and thank its organizers. Tennessee Titans RB/WR Dexter McCluster served as the event’s official starter, MNPD Sgt. Clifton Knight performed a touching rendition of the national anthem prior to the race, followed by dozens of cadets running together with hundreds of others.

“David’s generosity and Shoney’s support of the MNPD is without equal and is truly appreciated,” said Chief Anderson. “Shoney’s helps make Nashville the thriving city it is and this event benefits our officers with higher education opportunities they might not otherwise have. This event gets better every year and we could not be more thankful.”

One hundred percent of the event’s proceeds benefit the Nashville Police Support Fund, a component of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. The fund provides tuition assistance to police officers seeking social-science related college degrees.  Nearly $180,000 has been raised by Shoney’s over the past eight years.

The male and female winners of the 5K, Scott Wietecha and Lydia Kosgei each received $500.

Shoney’s serves more than a million slices of its famous Strawberry Pie each year. The dessert has been a part of Shoney’s rich history and has played a key role in the brand’s recent resurgence, according to Mr. David Davoudpour, Shoney’s Chairman and CEO.

“We’ve been America’s Dinner Table for nearly 70 years and Strawberry Pie is one of America’s favorite desserts. Shoney’s didn’t discover the strawberry, but we have perfected the Strawberry Pie,” said Mr. Davoudpour. “Nothing makes us happier than to serve families across America great food and treating Moms to a delicious and free dessert. Please join us for fresh quality food at a great value with friendly service on this very special day.”

Since acquiring the great American eatery in 2007, Mr. Davoudpour has been on a driven and spirited mission to reinvigorate and revitalize Shoney’s, a family-friendly, southern-style restaurant brand. Shoney’s is one of the first and is still one of the most popular family casual dining concepts in the United States.

In order to get back to what Mr. Davoudpour confidently calls Shoney’s “Glory Days,” the brand is now growing through franchising following an extensive revitalization effort. Shoney’s is offering franchising opportunities to qualified single and multi-unit candidates. For more information, visit http://www.shoneys.com/franchise/.

The FREE slice of Strawberry Pie does require a purchase of the Mother’s Day Brunch and is available for dine-in only. The offer is available at participating Shoney’s restaurants. Prices may vary.
